  12. Soaps and detergents: Advantages and disadvantages

Method for Quick Understanding:

  1. Understand about covalent bonding and its illustration using structures of H2, N2 and O2.
  2. Go through the differences between allotropes of carbon.
  3. Go through the types of chemical reactions of carbon compounds.
  4. Learn the formulas and structures of functional groups.
MERITNATION TIPS:

a) Solve previous year question papers to check your preparation level and emphasize on repeated questions.

b) Practise questions on nomenclature, writing formula and drawing structures of various carbon compounds.

c) Develop homologous series of various functional groups by yourself and practice to name them.

d) Understand various chemical reactions and learn them.

Chapter: Periodic classification of elements

Important Topics:

  1. Döbereiner’s Triads
  2. Newlands’ Law of Octaves
  3. Mendeleev’s periodic table
  4. Modern Periodic Table
  5. Trends in the Modern Periodic Table

Method for Quick Understanding:

  1. Understand the importance of classification of elements and how with time every scientist had contributed significantly in development of modern periodic table.
  2. Understand how elements has been placed in modern periodic table on the basis of atomic number and how electronic configuration of these elements can be written.
MERITNATION TIPS:

a) Read Mendeleev’s periodic table in detail including its merits and demerits.

b) Go through modern periodic table and understand how elements have been classified in it.

c) Summarised form of trends in periodic table:

Chapter: Light – Reflection and Refraction

Important Topics:

  1. Image Formation by Spherical Mirrors
  2. Refraction of Light through Glass Slab
  3. Image Formation by Spherical Lenses
  4. Lens Formula, Magnification and Power

Method for Quick Understanding:

  1. We have already studied these topics in lower grades. But the sign convention, magnifications are new and require more attention.
  2. Understanding of reflection and refraction of light is required. Images formed by mirrors and lenses are of different size and are formed at different positions. They can be virtual or real.
  3. New cartesian sign conventions are used for image formations. Lens formula and mirror formulas are used to determine the positions or the height of object and image. The magnification is ratio of height of image to height of object.
MERITNATION TIPS:

a) Make a chart for Image formation for both the mirrors and lenses separately. Place it at your study to keep them on your tips. Practise ray diagrams for same.

b) Always remember the sign conventions while using lens and mirror formulas. Numericals based on Lens formula, mirror formula, magnifications are asked very frequently.

Method for Quick Understanding:

  1. Our eye is a lens system based on refraction and forms an image on retina. The ability of eye to focus near and distant objects is called accommodation of eye. Some of us wear specs to correct this accommodation of eye or defects. These defects includes myopia, hypermetropia, presbyopia, etc.
  2. The chapter also focus on some common phenomenons observed due to refraction of light through atmosphere, scattering and dispersion. A thorough reading and understanding the concepts is sufficient.
MERITNATION TIPS:

a) Draw the structure of eye, label it and write the functions of the parts against it.

b) Practise the ray diagram for each defect and correction.

c) However the topics like dispersion, scattering and atmospheric refraction is theoretical, phenomenal based question can be asked directly from the topics.
