Tough Entrance Exams

Medical Entrance Exams in India are held both on an All India basis as well State Level. Some national level institutes also conduct their own entrance exams.

NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test)

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is a national level undergraduate medical entrance exam conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). It allows medical aspirants to take a single entrance examination to get admission to almost all medical colleges in India, including private medical colleges.

Currently 15% of the total seats in all medical and dental colleges run by departments under the Government of India are reserved for candidates who pass this examination. This includes more than 2500 MBBS and approximately 400 dental seats.

NRI Quota

Indian Nationals and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) are Eligible for appearing in the NEET 2017. All participating States/Universities/Institutions have an NRI quota, which varies from college to college. The exact number and country-based allocation of these reserved seats may vary annually. Students seeking admission to the reserved seats are required to apply through the Indian missions abroad or through the diplomatic missions of the respective countries in India.

Eligibility:

  • AgeApplicant must have completed the age of 17 years at the time of admission or will complete the age on or before 31st December of the year of his/her admission.
  • Academic RequirementAny applicant who passed Class XII examination with an aggregate of 50% marks in the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Bio-Technology) and also passed English in the Qualifying  Examination from any recognised Board/University can appear in the NEET subject to other conditions.

Exam Format:

The exam is conducted in a single stage which generally takes place on the first Sunday of May. The examination consists of one paper containing 180 objective type questions from Physics,Chemistry and Biology (Botany & Zoology). The duration of NEET 2017 will be 03 hours.

  • 523,701 candidates appeared for the exam in 2016
  • 46,271 candidates qualified

Reservations

15% seats are reserved for SC candidates, 7.5% seats are reserved for ST candidates, 27% seats are reserved for OBC

STATE LEVEL EXAMS

Each state in India also has its state level medical exams. These are known as state level PMTs. They cover over 40,000 seats for MBBS. The most popular of these are:

GUJCET – Gujarat Common Entrance Test

PRIVATE COLLEGES

India has some excellent private colleges as well for Medical Studies. Foreign citizens, PIO card holders, OCI (Dual Citizens), NRI students and NRI sponsored students can apply under the Foreign/NRI category. They cover about 40,000 seats across India. 15% of the seats in private medical colleges in India are reserved for this category, however there may be a slight variation as per individual college rules.
